BURTON IN LONSDALE CASTLE

Photos Matthew Emmott

There remains a large motte, still 30 foot high, with two clearly visible baileys to the west and south. It originated as a ringwork in the 12th century and was converted into a motte at a later date. The castle ceased to be used in the middle of the 14th century.

Private.
